ST. CROIX - Earlier this week, Country Day School not only took top honors during the 32nd Annual Virgin Islands Quiz Bowl on St. Thomas, but did so for the sixth year in a row.

The team - coached by Kevin Marin - consisting of captain Jean-Paul Antoine, William Neville, Sean Marin, Monty Gallegos, Genna Keller, and Blare Coughlin, will go on to compete in the national leg of the competition May 23 through 25 in New Orleans.

Antoine remarked how each player held their own weight in the competition, focusing their strengths on particular categories and subjects.

'That's what gave us the victory we needed in the end," Antoine said.

The team said they practiced every day at lunch, running over sample questions from past Quiz Bowls, in addition to other cramming.

"I think we're ready to get to the level that we need to," Keller said, referencing the upcoming competition. "But practice doesn't hurt."

Coach Marin, how has led six different teams to Virgin Islands victories in his six years coaching at Country Day, simply said he was proud of his team and their efforts to retain the information to win the competition.

"I was really just happy to have the experience," Neville said.

Competing against eight other private, public and parochial high schools in the territory. Country Day students toppled their opponents over the two days and 14 rounds held at the Palms Court Harborview Hotel on St. Thomas.

Coming in second was the All Saints Cathedral School, with Ivanna Eudora Kean High School, both on St. Thomas, taking third.

Other schools competing were the Good Hope School, St. Croix Educational Complex and Central High School on St. Croix, as well as the Antilles School and Charlotte Amalie High School on St. Thomas.

Bowl sponsors included the St. Thomas-St. John chapter of the American Federation of Teachers, Local 1825.

Other sponsors included Hovensa, the Harborview Hotel, WTJX-TV, the St. Thomas-St. John Board of Realtors and Pedi Spec."
