ST. CROIX - Grinning, trophy-clutching Country Day School "mathletes" stepped to the top of the renowned MathCounts competition Thursday afternoon, and are now prepared to square off against the best Antilles School has to offer.
The final round takes place on St. Thomas March 26 at an as-yet unidentified location, according to Department of Education officials.
Country Day won first overall in the team category with 14-year-old Caylee Watson, 14 year-old Quinn Galbreath, 13 year-old Cameron Hoss and 12-year-old Chris Car nabbing the top team trophies.
Individually, Car, Quinn, Chandelier Nelson of the Good Hope School, and Adara McCorminck, too, of Country Day, will go on to compete individually.
Jean Devera, 12, of Country Day won the "Countdown Round" award, a contest where students competed against each other on the clock to solve problems, and will advance as well.
According to the Department of Education, MathCounts is a national program designed to improve math skills among U.S. students, and focuses on youth in the "crucial stage" of developing and sustaining math interest and ability - middle school students.
The annual event on-island is organized by the St. Croix District mathematics coordinator Juanita Boneque, and is sponsored by the Rotary Club of St. Croix Mid-Isle, according to Rotary officials.
Other local sponsors include Division of Curriculum, Assess ment and Technology, St. Croix Curriculum Center Staff, Mathematics Teachers Leaders, Capitol Tee's and the University of the Virgin Islands.
