Students Donate Livestock to Needy

The
National Honor Society (NHS) raised funds to improve the
lives of hungry, impoverished families around the world
through Heifer International. Heifer
International works with families and communities by delivering

s
elected
animals and training entire families in animal handling and
care in order to promote earth-friendly farming practices. Unlike
many global relief organizations, Heifer International emphasizes
community involvement to affect long-term solutions in famine
stricken areas of the world. NHS supports this novel approach
to help families and communities help themselves by raising
money that will sponsor the sending of a variety of farm animals
to a chosen community in need.
CDS Upper
School students and faculty participated in the "Walk
For Water" event where five gallon pails of dirty water
were transported around the soccer field. The goal of this
event was to show the difficulty impoverished families have
getting necessities that many of us take for granted. The
water was purposely dirty to emphasize the fact that these
families walk miles and miles for water every day that is
not even clean.
NHS, Future
Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and the Rotary Interact
Club (Interact) pledged 50 cents per person per lap and raised
$1252.50. The total project goal will raise enough money to
purchase the "Joy to the World" package via Heifer
International. The price of this package is $1,500 and it
includes two sheep, four goats, one heifer, and two llamas.
NHS will continue their morning coffee sales to make up the
difference.
The goals
for the overall project are to:
o Educate
the student body about the plight of starving, uneducated
children
o Teach CDS students how to organize a school-wide community
service project
o Work towards an end to world hunger and promote care of
the planet
o Promote local and global awareness
