Teaching
Science & Technology with a Flare
| In
the fall semester Mr. Garren sponsored an after school activity
in which fifth and sixth grade students studied solar flare
activity. This is part of a worldwide educational outreach
program sponsored by Stanford University, with over 250
schools participating. |

|
Mr.
Garren and his seven solar scientists began the project
by studying solar flare activity and how it impacts the
atmosphere. Then they actually constructed the antenna,
a process which included pouring concrete, cutting pipe,
and wrapping over 1,000 feet of cable. The antennae is
a 6-foot loop antennae designed by Carl Chernan, a guru
in the field. The students teleconferenced with Mr. Chernan
who spoke with them about how the antennae works.

The
antenna receives the signal, and through a monitor provided
by Stanford University, the data is transmitted to scientists.
Being involved in this program will provide ongoing learning
opportunities for our budding scientists. Thanks, Mr.
Garren, for your time and enthusiasm.
