Country
Day is very proud of our MathCounts team! They didn't stop with
winning the team competition; the title of Top Mathlete and
1st place Mathlete in the Countdown Round were also given to
members of the CDS team! All four team members placed in the
top eight for the entire competition.
Fifty-two students from eight St. Croix schools participated
in the Regional MathCounts Competition on February 28th at Good
Hope School. The competition consisted of four rounds, three
for individuals and one for teams. The team round, traditionally
one of Country Day's best, consisted of ten problems to be solved
by the four team members. The Countdown Round was an oral knockout
round in which pairs of students raced each other to answer
a math problem, a task that takes quick math skills and nerves
of steel.
An example
problem is: The giant earthmover used for open-air coal mining
has rubber circular tires 11.5 feet in diameter. How many revolutions
does each tire make during a six-mile trip (to the nearest whole
number)?
Country Day's first all-female team will be traveling to St.
Thomas on March 17 for the Territorial Competition to face the
top four mathletes and the Antilles School team. The National
Competition will be held May 5 through 8 in Detroit, Michigan.
The four top individual Mathletes in the territory are eligible
to go to Michigan.
The answer
is 877 revolutions.
