Science Bowl Team is #1 in USVI!
On March
1st and 2nd, Country Day traveled to St. Thomas for this year's
Science Bowl competition. The double elimination competition
had the team's first match against Antilles school.
Taking an
early lead, CDS dominated the match, winning 108 - 30. This
match was memorable because the scientific judges ruled that
"No one has ever heard the columns of the periodic table
called families." and for the now-famous answer to the
question, "What is used to measure the brightness of stars?"
Our answer was, of course, the Twinkle Meter.

The next
match pitted us against a relatively new team from Good Hope.
At the half, GHS led 34 - 26, but the CDS team battled back
and won 66 - 46. The final match of the day was against Sts.
Peter and Paul and by leading in correct bonus questions, CDS
won 54 - 34.
The first
match on Tuesday was against Central High School. At the half,
CDS led 22 - 4, but a second half push from Central sent them
into the lead, winning 50 - 38. A quick recovery from this defeat
was needed! The team regrouped, now in the looser's bracket,
and won a second match against Sts. Peter and Paul 20 -16.

Now in the
finals, Country Day had to beat an undefeated Central twice
to win. The game was a nail-biter, but Country Day won 28 -
26. Our hero of the match was for remembering the definition
of critical pressure, which Mr. Summerhayes had assured her
Chemistry class was "not really important, just know about
critical pressure." Thank you, Mr. Summerhayes!
Using the
same strategy as their previous match, the CDS team worked hard
to establish an early lead. The strategy was again successful
- Country Day won 48 - 8.
The team
dedicated their win to their Quiz Bowl coach, Mr. Roth and to
their science teachers. They will travel to Washington DC during
MiniGusto to compete in the National Science Bowl.
