losers bracket, where they fought it out to win four straight games and earn a place in the 30th annual V.I. Academic Quiz Bowl championship
Antilles breezed through the tournament on the way to the final, having won just two games before the championship Tuesday.
Because they had already lost once in the double elimination tournament, Country Day had to beat Antilles twice in a row to earn the title.
The first game saw both teams answering detailed questions about myriad subjects.
From arctic explorers to ancient terms to obscure vocabulary, it seemed that nothing was too trivial or arcane. The players were rarely stumped.
Country Day came out on top of the first game, 305-240.
The two teams played very closely during the second and final game. Then, in the fourth round of that game in a section called "stump the experts," Country Day pulled away.
The Country Day players answered question after question about current events correctly.
By the end it was clear Country Day was well in control. They finished the game far ahead, 295-195.
"You ended it looking like champions," Country Day coach Kevin Marin told the players after their win.
Marin said that the team is consistent because it builds the program through a junior varsity program.
"I give a great deal of credit to the school community as a whole," Marin said. "They give us a lot of support." |
