The Logical Journey of the Zoombinis

Second Project

Remember what a Zoombini is?

Here is your assignment.

Task 1:           Following Instructions and Skills

Task 1a:      Instructions

-       At this point you needed to have found this page on the Projects page on my web site

-       NO TALKING UNTIL I SAY YOU ARE ALLOWED TO TALK.  I will make a formal announcement that it is now okay for you to talk.

-       Read all of the instructions before continuing.

-       You may NOT ask me any questions about your instructions until you've finished reading them all at least once.

-       Do not close these instructions until I announce to do so at the end of class.  Closing prematurely will cause you to lose points.  Also, going on and doing the tasks you are about to read will cause you to lose points.

Task 1b:  Skills

There are a few skills you are going to need to know in order to complete your assignment.  You will need to demonstrate these upon demand.  You will also need to know when to use which.

Toggling from the Menu Bar

You've learned to go to another software package by clicking to the right of the date in the menu bar.  Clicking on the name and icon of the software package already running, but you were able to see the software package you wanted to go to.  However, while running Zoombinis, YOU WON'T be able to see the menu bar.  Here's the skill you will be using.

Toggling with the Keyboard

In Windows) holding the “"Alt" key down and hitting tab will toggle you through running and/or open software.

On a Macintosh, holding the “"Apple" key” (or command key) and the "tab" key will do the same thing.

Setting the Monitor's Control Panel

This skill was learned in the first class.  Refresh my memory

Task 2:  Create a journal in Microsoft Word.

1. Launch Microsoft Word

2. Choose Word Document

3. Save see next step:

Get into the habit of saving immediately.  You may name the journal file anything you like, but the filename extension (what it ends in) MUST be “".doc" , and the file MUST be saved in your folder on the network.

o      You'll lose points if you don't save when you are supposed to.

o      You''ll also lose points if you don't save in the correct location or with the correct filename extension.

o      If you accidentally save the file on the desktop, you must save the file in the correct location and remove your file icon from the desktop (put it in the trash).

If you accidentally save it on the desktop but save it in the correct location afterwards, you will lose points for not trashing the file from the desktop.

Task 3:  Journal format

See example of a journal.

Task 3a:  Heading

Type:  “"Zoombini Journal"

Hit return key

Type: “" for" [your name]

Hit return key twice

Center the words on the page with the formatting pallet.

If you don't see it, click on View menu then on Formatting Pallet.

Note:   The words in brackets should be replaced by what your name is.

Do not type the brackets or the quotations marks.

Task 3b: Journal Entries

This journal is going to keep track of your adventures with the Zoombinis.

There should be at least one blank row between entries.  (Hit the return key 1 extra time.)

Remember a journal has dated entries.  Each entry should begin with a date.

You need to have an entry for the beginning of a level.

You need to have a journal entry for the completion of a level.

Save after each journal entry.

Task 3b-1: Last class entry

Put the date of your last class and tell me what you learned so far in order to play the Zoombinis game or while playing the Zoombinis game (2-3 sentences should be fine).  Hit return twice and put today's date.  See an example of a journal.

Task 3b-2:  Logic Research Journal Entry

Date!  Your first journal entry today is to find out exactly what the words, "logic" and "logical" mean.  Go to the web site, http://www.dictionary.com/, and find out what the two words mean.  Take e-notes of the two definitions and put them in your journal (don' t forget to credit the source!!!).  Save the journal.

Task 3b-3:  Beginning Stage Journal Entry

Don't forget Zoombini Isle is the first stage on the map. Each beginning stage journal entry must have the following information: (Don't forget to SAVE.)

-       Name of the stage (can be found in the help screens [?] )

-       How many Zoombinis you started the stage with

-       1 sentence describing what you are expected to do

Task 3b-3:  Completing Stage Journal Entry

After you complete a stage, make the journal entry before you start the next stage.

Each completion journal entry must have the following information: (Don't forget to SAVE.)

-       How many Zoombinis went on to the next stage

-       In 1-to-2 sentence(s), state what you had to do to complete the level

See example of an acceptable journal.

SAVE SAVE SAVE - Save the journal after each entry beginning or completion.

Task 4:  You are NOT to share with your classmates this next step.  They must find it out on their own.  Once you've read this instruction for the first time, tell me that you've read the instructions.  If you tell someone, you will lose both your points for this part of the assignment and their points for it.  Additionally, they will lose points for this portion of the assignment.

Task 5:  Now, you may go on, and proceed with the project.  Have FUN!  But don't forget your journal entries.
