1st Graders Discover Globetrotting with Spike

First Graders learn to respect their community, starting with each other. Every few weeks a child becomes a "Star Student"...a highly sought recognition when they are class leaders and share about themselves on a bulletin board. Our experienced teachers collaborate with daily lessons in math, social studies, science, reading & writing for their classes. Parents and aides help give individual attention too.

Children receive regular specialized lessons in art, music, P.E./ Swimming and Spanish as well as library use.

Creative work is a part of every day in the first grade classrooms. Holidays inspire many projects and are a time for celebration that includes all the cultures of our varied student-body.

Science is emphasized in the Spring as first graders celebrate Earth Day. They learn about our planet & its minerals and critters. They also accomplish a unit on beginning oceanography which

incorporates studies of the Sea around us and is reflected in the children's art and written work.

At the end of a busy day, many CDS students stay on campus for supervised play and activities. Parent volunteers share in the fun with offerings like cooking, jump-rope and drama. Homework is minimal and fun.
