Through the community service program at Country Day School
we hope to instill in our students the desire to give willingly
and freely of their time towards the needs of our community
without seeking any rewards in return.
Requirements: All
students in grades 7th through 12th are required to complete a minimum number
of community service hours for the academic school year. Each year, most of our
students perform many hours of service beyond the minimum. Listed below are the
required hours for each grade level: 7th
grade students……….8 hours required
8th grade students……….10 hours required
All Upper School students...15 hours required How
to get started: Students
will be given a community service card to record of their community service time.
Many students do not wait to receive their cards and are already volunteering
their services around the community. During the school year various community
service opportunities are posted in our school bulletin and shared with the students
during advisory time. If there is an opportunity posted that is of some interest
to students, they should see Mrs. Nurse or the person in charge of the service
announcement for more information on how to get involved. Students can also see
Mrs. Nurse for the names of organizations that are looking volunteers. The key
to being active and meeting the community service requirement is not waiting until
the last minute to get involved. Getting involved early allows students to manage
time efficiently over the school year.
My Brother’s Table:
My Brother’s Table is a nonprofit
charity located in Frederiksted that provides hot meals to those who need it. All Upper School students and some
select Middle School students have an opportunity to volunteer their services
at MBT. Students are driven to and from MBT on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Students
spend at least one hour there assisting the workers in serving food and cleaning
up afterwards. Students earn 11/2 community service hours for their work.
How
and When are Hours Checked:
Community service hours are checked at the
end of every quarter by the student’s homeroom advisor. By December, students
are expected to be midway through their community service requirement. By April-May,
before Mini Gusto, cards are checked for completion. Any student not having completed
his or her hours by this time can sign up for a community service Mini Gusto activity.
Before Orange and White Day, completed community service cards for upper school
students are collected by advisors and turned in to Mrs. Nurse’s office. All cards
should be signed by the appropriate sponsors for whom the students volunteered
their services. Middle school advisors will record students’ hours and submit
a list to Ms Blanchette's’ office.
Reminder: Community service is given free of
charge. The student should not gain any monetary rewards and the event, organization
or office they are volunteering with should be aimed at helping, servicing and
making a difference in the community. If you have further questions about our
program, please feel free to contact Mrs. Nurse in her office or call her at 778-1974
